Aquaculture planning and local fisheries. The case of Catalonia, Spain

Although aquaculture is normally developed by companies independent of the fishing sector, there are important positive synergies which can improve the viability and profitability of the projects when the fishing sector participates in them. In the case of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia, of the 32 existing fishermen's guilds, 20 of them sell fish, half of which are involved in marine fish farming and mollusc cultivation. Aquaculture production is approximately 15.
