Grassland multiple use to develop naturalistic tourism in Mediterranean Italy

Diversification in the use of resources is widespread in Mediterranean pastoral systems. Large variability reduces efficiency but it favours ecological stability compared with more specialized systems. Land management should be planned with the aim of developing tourism and creating links between rural and urban economies. In the light of these expectations, an experiment was conducted on rangelands, forests and fuel cuttings in central Italy. Economical management practices were implemented based on the use of lower than potential stocking rates and on drastically reducing mechanical actions. Improvements on tourism were also examined. The results obtained showed that pastoral systems can be maintained and diversified by 'minimum' animal farming and by cutting, before summer, the grasses that have not been used. Besides, this type of management system favours tourism activities.
