La digestion microbienne chez les camélidés

Jouany J.P., Kayouli C.

The rare digestive studies made on one-humped camel show that they digest cellulose better than ruminants. Scientific programmes could be developed to explain the specific attributes of these animals, which enable them to survive in severe conditions. They can use plants known to be indigestible for the ruminant (shrubs, tough plants, date stones, etc.). This paper proposes to analyse the rough data provided by the bibliography and to draw some from the assumptions on the operation of the fermentor which constitute the forestomach of Camelidae, while trying to highlight the gaps of bone knowledge and the means of filling them.
