La politique de diversification de l'aquaculture en Corse . La démarche 'nouvelles espèces'

Lensi P.

The aquaculture diversification policy in Corsica. The 'new species' approach'. Corsica is the foremost region for sea fish production in France and the Territorial Collectivity of Corsica has set up a development programme to add maximum value to the local produce. The diversification of the aquacultural production, included in the priority orientations of this programme, represents the first step taken by the Region of Corsica in this direction. The objective of this undertaking is to set up new production channels to increase the range of marine aquaculture products. Therefore, a technical-economic feasibility study was carried out in 1994 regarding the possibility of rearing new fish species. The study aimed to select the most interesting potential species in aquaculture, on one hand contributing to the analysis and evolution of sea produce consumption, and on the other to the suitability of several fish species populating the Mediterranean to be reared in aquaculture. The approach of such a study, its conclusions, together with subsequent practical consequences in the diversification programme set up by the Region are described in this article.
