Trials of seeds production of local ecotypes have been carried out for 3 years (1989/90 to 1991/92) in ITGC's station at Guelma. The species are: Medicago scutellata, Scorpiurus muricstus subsp. sulcatus and Trifolium subterraneum. Seed production has varied between 11q/ha (subterranean clover) and 42q/ha (Medicago scutellata). In order to reduce the pressure of grazing on massif forest of Beni-Salah (East of Algeria), during the campaign 1990/91, the plots (0.5 ha) have been seeded with species mentioned at the top. The grazing began on the 24 January for Medicago and clover and on the 02 February for Scorpiurus; for grazing fallow (reference) it began on the 10 January. The stocking rate was 9 sheep/ha for 4 plots. The grazing was stopped on the 16 March for the ecotypes and on the 12 March for grazing fallow. The grazing recovery begun during April at different dates. The stocking rate applied was 10 sheep/ha at the beginning and has been modified according to the plot type.
