Pour lutter contre l'infection des variétés de vignes cultivées par différents virus qui occasionne de lourdes pertes, une directive européenne régit le contrôle sanitaire pour l'obtention d'un matériel de multiplication sain. Toutefois, ces directives étant insuffisantes, un groupe de travail s'est constitué en un réseau de recherche afin d'adapter ces dispositions. Les résultats de ces travaux de recherche ont été consignés dans un ouvrage. ISBN 2-85352-205-9
