In this study we analyze the price inducement effect of a generalized water tariff increase in the adoption of water saving innovation at farm level. We apply a linear programming decision making model to analyze the determinants affecting the adoption of two types of innovation: a process innovation, consisting on a crop mulching practice, and a management innovation, based on a voluntary water seasonal pricing scheme, differentiated according to a peak and off-peak periods. According to our results, the mulching practice is not affected by the tariffs that are still lower than the water marginal productivity, while they exert a negative effect when they become higher. On the contrary, the adoption of the voluntary water seasonal pricing scheme is affected by the tariffs increase only if the latter induce an excessive concentration of water demand during the peak.

Dans cette étude nous analysons l'effet incitatif de l'augmentation générale des tarifs de l'eau pour l'adoption d'innovations encourageant les agriculteurs à économiser cette ressource. Nous avons appliqué un modèle de programmation linéaire d'aide à la décision pour déterminer les éléments affectant l'adoption de deux types d'innovation : l'une est un procédé concernant une technique de paillis, l'autre est liée à la gestion et vise à l'introduction d'un système volontaire de tarifs saisonniers de l'eau en fonction de l'intensité des périodes d'utilisation. Les résultats montrent que l'augmentation du tarif de l'eau ne suffit pas à convaincre les agriculteurs d'adopter la technique du paillis si le prix est inférieur à la productivité marginale de l'eau. Mais s'il est supérieur, il freine alors l'adoption de l'innovation. Au contraire, la hausse du prix de l'eau favorise l'introduction de tarifs différents mais seulement lorsque la demande est trop concentrée en période de pics.
