Nutritional evaluation of non-conventional fattening diets fed to sheep under arid conditions of Egypt
The study aimed to evaluate the nutrient utilization of four fattening diets based on silage of five halophytic shrubs, dried broiler litter and molasses, supplemented with concentrate feed mixture (CFM), barley grains (BG) and ground date seeds (GDS). Trials were carried out on twelve fattened male sheep in four equal treatments. T1: berseem hay supplemented with CFM. T2, T3 and T4: silage supplemented with CFM, GDS and BG, respectively. Digestibility of CF was affected by the type of diet. T3 recorded the maximum digestibility of NDF, ADF and ADL. Water consumption was decreased in T3 compared to T1. Sodium intake was decreased in T3 compared to T1. The maximum potassium retention was recorded for sheep in T4 and T3. Other intake, digestive, ruminal and metabolic parameters were not affected significantly. The halophytic silage supplemented with ground date seeds could be highly recommended as a non-conventional fattening diet for sheep.
