Early growth and pod production of ten French honey locust varieties in a semi-arid Mediterranean environment of Greece
In 1992, ten honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos L.) clone-varieties developed in southern France were transferred as one year-old saplings and planted in a semi-arid Mediterranean environment of Greece. The objective was to test their growth and productivity as fodder trees for meeting the animal needs during the critical period of autumn and early winter. Ten years after their establishment the results show that some of these varieties were better adapted to the new environment and produced more pods per tree than others. More specifically, most of them were more than 5 m high. Some varieties started to produce pods in 1995 but only in 1997 was pod production generalized. Since then, pod number and yield per tree varied considerably between years. No single variety seems to be outstanding for developing fodder plantations. It is better to mix at least 3 to 5 varieties so that sustained pod production is achieved.
