Varieties of vetch (Vicia sativa L.) for forage and grain production in Mediterranean areas
The objective of this study is to obtain information on the possibilities of vetch farming in the Pre-Pyrenees. Sixteen vetch cultivars were studied in two campaigns (1999-2000 and 2000-2001) under irrigation and non-irrigation conditions. Cultivars were sown in mid-November and forage and grain harvest took place at the beginning of June, when pods change from green to yellow. Results show that cultivars can be divided according to the flowering date into three groups, and that most of them have average flowering times. Average forage production of dry matter was estimated at 8338 kg per ha and 5470 kg per ha under irrigation and non-irrigation conditions, respectively. Grain production, 840 kg per ha and 900 kg per ha were recorded under irrigation and non-irrigation conditions, respectively. This difference may be due to lodging and dehiscence of pods under irrigation. Our results show that vetch is well adapted to Mediterranean areas for the production of both quality forage and grain.
