Toward responsible olive tourism in Pakistan: Potential assessment and participatory planning

Marchetti M., Parma C., Rana A.U.R.

Olive cultivation in Pakistan is emerging as a multidimensional driver of sustainable rural development, combining economic growth, environmental conservation, and cultural valorization. The present study explores the potential of olive-based tourism as an innovative approach capable of linking olive production with local traditions, gastronomy, landscapes, biodiversity, and community participation. Drawing on Mediterranean experiences and the rapid expansion of olive plantations in Pakistan, the study highlights how olive tourism can diversify rural incomes, create employment opportunities, promote local products, and strengthen territorial identity. Moreover, it highlights the importance of responsible and participatory tourism models that involve local communities, women, and youth while preserving natural and cultural heritage. The institutional, infrastructural, and policy requirements necessary for developing sustainable olive tourism destinations in Pakistan have been analyzed. By integrating agriculture, culture, and tourism within a common territorial strategy, olive tourism is presented as a promising tool for enhancing rural resilience, encouraging sustainable investment, and supporting long-term socio-economic development in olive-growing regions.
