Résumé

Agroecological transition is gaining increasing interest in North Africa in response to the agronomic, socio-economic, and institutional challenges impacting agricultural systems across the region. This special issue, The Transition to Agroecology in North Africa - Science, Practice, and Policy, brings together contributions from the NATAE project (2022 - 2026) detangling the transition to agroecology from diverse and complementary perspectives. Divided over three themes, it examines the current state of today’s agricultural systems, through territorial diagnoses and collection of stakeholders’ perceptions, and explores the diversity of agroecological dynamics across North African territories. It highlights farmers’ practices, traditional knowledge, as well as the socioeconomic, and institutional factors that enable or constrain the transition process. This special issue additionally explores the potential of participatory approaches through Living Labs as spaces for co-designing and testing context-specific innovations, in strengthening knowledge exchange, and supporting the adaptation and scaling of agroecological practices. It also addresses the role of public policies, governance mechanisms, and education systems in fostering more inclusive and context-specific transitions. By connecting territorial realities, pathways of change and policy and educational frameworks, this special issue highlights the complex, multidimensional and place-based nature of agroecological transitions.
