Improving safety: From feed to food PB - Zaragoza : CIHEAM VL - 54 T3 - Cahiers Options Méditerranéennes SP - 213-215 A2 - Brufau J. AB - A trial was conducted with 120 21d-old piglets to study the effect of flavours in their weaning diet. The animals were distributed in 30 pens of four animals, and five experimental diets were tested: T-1 (control diet) and T-2, T-3, T-4 and T-5 (control diet plus 4 different presentations of flavour). Body weight and food intake were measured at 21 and 35 days of trial. No differences were observed between the four diets containing flavour; therefore only the contrasts between the control diet and the other four diets together are reported. Using flavour increased weight gain and feed intake between 0 and 21 days. Between 21 and 35 d of experiment, the use of flavour also improved weight gain, feed intake and feed-gain ratio. During the experimental period flavour improved weight gain, feed intake and feed-gain ratio. It is concluded that flavour supplementation of diets significantly improved performance after weaning.
