The reuse of drainage water. Technical and economic aspects in Egyptian agriculture

Colombo G.

The future development of Egyptian farming mostly depends on the expansion of farming activities, closely related to the availability of larger amounts of irrigation water. This increased availability will result from a better use of underground water and, in particular, of drainage water. The reuse of wastewater is a complex practice, requiring great care, involving hydrogeological, hydrologic, and agronomic as well as water management and economic policy studies. This paper discusses about a pilot project based on an integrated approach to the reuse of drainage water for irrigation in the Fayoum area.
