Les espèces ligneuses du genre Medicago : variabilité et perspectives d'amélioration

Chebbi H., Pascual M.J., Correal E.

Data are presented about the main morphological differences between the species: M. arborea, M. citrina and M. strasserii. First data about their drought and cold tolerance are also included. M. citrina seems more tolerant to drought because it maintains its leaves during summer. M. arborea can withstand cold temperatures and has more intraspecific variability. To expand the distribution area of these species to drier and cooler Mediterranean areas, a breeding programme has been elaborated and proposed.
