Etude comparative de la production de gousses de populations de Medicago orbicularis (L.) Bart ; relation avec les conditions du milieu d'origine

Chebouti A., Abdelguerfi A., Mefti M.

The study reports on the variation of pod production characteristics in 48 populations of Medicago orbicularis (L.) Bart. examined in two different sites in Algeria. The characters examined were: number and weight of pods per plant and individual pod weight. These characters were related with altitude and annual rainfall of the collection sites. The results showed wide variation among populations, individual pod weight being the most discriminant character. A positive correlation was found between weight of pods, number of pods and individual pod weight at both El-Harrach and Beni-Slimane. At El-Harrach the populations originating from high rainfall environments were characterized by heavier pods and higher number of pods relative to the populations originating from drier environments. No relationships were found between plant characteristics and environment of origin when the populations were examined at Beni-Slimane.
