The cooperative research group 'Research Network on rabbit production under Mediterranean conditions' of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute, has been devoted since 1987 to the objectives of finding new technologies for rabbit meat production systems adapted to the ecological, sociological and economical conditions of southern Mediterranean countries with a hot climate, seeking to valorize the local resources (animals and inputs). Therefore the analysis and synthesis of knowledge acquired was made, coordinating both manpower and studies dealing with the rabbit as a meat producer in the Mediterranean area of the CIHEAM countries. The first publication of the group was gathering the papers which have been discussed within two seminars in Zaragoza (Spain) and Saida (Tunisia). They placed their emphasis on illustration for rabbit farming in certain countries and genetical management methods in small rabbit populations. Based on the Tunisian example the first studies were presented on the possibilities of using these methods adapted to the environment of a local rabbit population. The second publication of the group concerns a conference which was hosted by the Faculty of Agriculture and Zagazig University, Egypt. The previous work was continued from illustration of rabbit meat production in some countries. Furthermore, emphasis was placed on the synthesis of knowledge gathered in northern and southern regions of the Mediterranean area in experiments on comparisons of breeds and crosses on one hand, on other hand there were studies about criteria for the studies of genetic comparisons, biological factors in reproduction and production performance, together with the effect of non genetic factors such as high temperature, season and local resources for animal feeding. This paper is giving another look from this history, together with emphasis about special constraints in hot climate and with low input production systems, to seek and trying to find some prospects for rabbit meat production improvement. It is mentioned that the results were gathered in order to contribute to a seminar about rabbit meat production systems which have been held in Valencia, 14-25 september 1992.
