Cutting effects on water balance in the leaves of Trifolium alexandrinum L.

Lazaridou M., Parisi Z., Noitsakis B.

The effects of cutting on the water balance of Trifolium alexandrinum L. (cv. Lito) leaves were studied with the aim of identifying growth compensation mechanisms. The experiment was conducted in a semi-arid region in the north of Greece, on a poor-fertility soil, under irrigation. Results showed that, despite the high stomatal conductance and transpiration values, the high leaf water potential values of cut plants were caused by the plants' ability to preserve a high leaf water potential. This favourable water balance results in high production levels.
