Genetic variation in seed softening of the annual pasture Medicago minima

Fedorenko D.E.F., Cocks P.S., Bowden J.W.

Seed softening has been studied in 12 populations of Medicago minima, native to Western Australia, the Mediterranean Basin and Argentina. Genetic differences have been found between the different populations studied. Two intra annual models identified within the Australian populations suggest the existence of ecotype differences. Most Mediterranean populations have shown different softening patterns, which takes place before that of Australian populations. Results are interpreted in relation to the geographical area of the species.
