Testicular cycle of the Mediterranean bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus L.)

The results obtained by the histological analysis of Mediterranean bluefin tuna testes collected over a seven-month period (February-August) are reported. Five phases of the testicular cycle were characterised: (i) quiescence (February-March); (ii) early spermatogenesis (April-early May); (iii) late spermatogenesis (middle May); (iv) spawning (late May-early July); and (v) regression (late July-September).
