Climatic conditions limit pistachio plantation in some parts of Iran. However, some endemic varieties of P. mutica and P. khinjuk exist. The objective of this study was to assess plantation and establishment of pistachio seedlings under semiarid conditions (annual rainfall below 250 mm). The experiment was conducted in 1994-1999 at Faizabad (Khorasan) Iran. P. mutica, P. khinjuk and P. vera seeds (Saracksi and Sephid cvs) were planted in the centre of the micro-catchment, and water was conducted toward the base of the plants via different treatments. There were significant differences between treatments and cultivars. The results indicated that Sephid and Saracksi cultivars could emerge and be established whereas P. mutica and P. khinjuk germinated well with soil moisture and died by the middle of the growing season. The results of germination and establishment of the plants, situation of roots and shoots for each treatment are investigated and discussed.
