Carloto A., Afonso L.

The Bravia goat is the only Portuguese goat breed produced for meat, in suckling systema. The increase of the kid value is essential in order to achieve the farm's economic sustainability. The traditional consumption of kid was concentrated during the Easter period and the summer festivities and this was in accordance with the season of production. However, this Christian celebration is losing its importance as a moment of family reunion. Consequently, the consumption of this product is decreasing. On the other hand, during Christmas the demand increased and considering the difference between demand and supply, the price of kids has also risen in this time of year. Without changing the natural production system, we introduced a program of artificial illumination in a farm of the Bravia goat breeding. During sixty days, six hours a day we used a minimum of 200 lux at the level of the animals' eyes, so as to obtain days of sixteen hours light. Fifteen days later the males were introduced in order to trigger sexual cycles in the period of inactivity. We obtained positives results, because 86 per cent of the deliveries occurred in September. This study allows us to conclude that it is possible to obtain an improved product value simply by changing the starting date of the sexual season.
