Culture of Pagellus bogaraveo: Present knowledge, problems and perspectives

Peleteiro J.B., Olmedo M., Alvarez-Blázquez B.

In 1991, a research project was initiated on the 'Development of culture techniques on new species'. The result was conclusive as regards blackspot sea bream (Pagellus bogaraveo B.), with high commercial value and acceptable biological characteristics for development in aquaculture. Considerable progress has been made in reproduction research, where spawning periods and the optimum conditions required for obtaining natural spawns, embryonic development and larvae morphometric characteristics have been defined. Larval culture has been developed without difficulty, and data on the influence of temperature and density in prefattening and, on fattening are also conclusive. With the lack of a specific feed, currently under development, blackspot sea bream presents a clearly differentiated behaviour depending on its location (cages or tanks). The production cycle is expected to be closed this year, with individuals born in captivity. In a period of about three years, we may have a technology for the industrial production of blackspot sea bream.
