L'erosione genetica di specie agrarie in ambito mediterraneo: rilevanza del problema e strategie d'intervento

Ricciardi L., Filippetti A.

After defining genetic erosion, the present work reviews some of its causes by citing historical cases in which humans had to face dramatically the loss of plant biodiversity. Emphasis is laid on the role of the Mediterranean region as primary and secondary centre of crop species diversification and on the great opportunity given by the Italian-Albanian scientific co-operation for protecting crop species typical of the Mediterranean region and in particular, of Apulia. Besides reporting data on genetic erosion of some crops (cereals, legumes, fruit and vegetables), possible intervention strategies are described aimed at preserving plant genetic variability according to traditional approaches and/or using advanced plant biotechnologies.
