Dans les Préalpes, l’activité agricole est aujourd’hui dominée par l’élevage ovin. Celui-ci est considéré comme essentiel dans ces territoires, tant pour son rôle dans l’entretien du paysage que pour le maintien d’un tissu rural. Il contribue en outre à fournir des produits ovins de qualité aux bassins de consommation régional et national. Un travail de diagnostic agraire montre que pour répondre à ces attendus communs, la petite région compte en fait sur une grande diversité d’exploitations d’élevage et de circuits de commercialisation. Dans un contexte d’agrandissement qui concerne toutes les exploitations, l’évaluation technicoéconomique de 5 systèmes de production ovins met en avant leur grande fragilité.

In the Alpine foothills, sheep breeding is the main remaining agricultural activity. Its preservation is essential to maintain activities in rural area, as well as for landscape management. Sheep breeding also provides high quality meat products to regional and national markets. To meet these expectations, the Alpine foothills rely on a wide diversity of sheep farms and marketing channels, which is highlighted in the first part of the paper. In a context of increasing herd sizes which applies for all sheep farms, the technico-economical assessment of 5 production systems provided in the second part of the paper sheds light on their great fragility.
